A Class 12 student of Patna, Dwishojoyee Banerjee has set an example to other students and citizens by her initiative to rid Bihar's capital of plastic pollution. Dwishojoyee creates paper bags from old newspapers and distributes them to small retailers and street vendors. Despite a complete ban on plastic bags, retailers, restaurants and street vendors continue to use it to pack goods. This creates a large volume of untreated garbage that ends up in stray animals intestines and gives rise to communicable diseases.
"Initially when I started the project, many shopkeepers were supportive of it. But there were others who questioned my motives and were wondering what am I gaining out of this," said Dwishojoyee. Until now she has been able to convince three shops and hopes to take the number up very soon.
